In brief: White mucus

This coughing up of white mucus along with hoarseness is typical of laryngopharangeal reflux.
The mucus actually emanates from the base of your throat and not from the back of the nose or the windpipe. This is difficult to eradicate. Getting a headache from forceful coughing may not have a serious cause unless frequent headaches occur other times also. An otolaryngologist is best to evaluate you.

In brief: How long??

If this cough has lasted more than 3 weeks it may be time to see your doctor. White mucous is not a sign of bacterial infection so antibiotics would not be effective.
If the cough is less than 3 weeks duration, you likely have acute viral bronchitis which will get better on its own. Stay hydrated and take acetaminophen for headache as needed. Headache while coughing is not unusual. Good luck!!
