Chronic hep b is a serious condition (even without symptoms) that can lead to liver cancer, with or without cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), or liver failure.
Such patients need to be monitored with blood tests, sonograms on a regular basis. Tenofovir 1st used in HIV (different viral infection); also effective in hep b inf; well tolerated in general; nausea in 10%; other side effects poss.
