In brief: Elevation of lipid
Hyperlipidemia is a term defined as some components of lipid higher than normal range.
Like elevation of total cholesterol, triglyceride , ldl, vldl and lp(a).

It is a fancy way of saying high cholesterol. There are a few components to cholesterol and it is important to know what is high or low. Triglycerides, LDL and HDL. You want LDL Low and HDL high and Trigs under 150.

Lipid is the medical term for fats. Blood is made of water with added salts, proteins & cells. Fats do not dissolve in water. Thus they must be packaged in water soluble shipping containers so as to move around within water. These shipping containers are called Lipoproteins: goo.gl/dhux4V, long divided into 5 subgroups by density relative to water (protein sinks; fats float). See: goo.gl/QMpZiI

In brief: Huperlipidemia
Hyperlipidemia is general term for elevated cholesterol.
There are four parts of lipid profile. Total cholesterol.Ldl so called bad cholesterol, HDL so called good cholesterol and triglycerides. If your LDL is high and HDL is normal or low, then it is called hyperlipidemia and needs to be treated with diet, exercise and medications.Triglycerides are by itself a risk factor and if it is high needs rx.

Actually the term means high lipids (fats) within blood (emia). Which fats are elevated varies widely. Cholesterol is a single molecule made by all animal cells on planet. There is no such thing as good or bad cholesterol; only cholesterol. LDL particles typically transport 3,000-6,000 fat molecules/particle. When LDL concentrations are not very low, arterial disease progresses more rapidly.

When Large-HDL concentrations are high, disease regresses.

In brief: ↑ed BloodFatProteins
Blood is water with added salts, proteins & cells.
Since fats are not soluble in water, fats are packaged in protein shipping containers called lipoproteins. When these are high (very unhealthy), this is called hyperlipidemia. Condition is driven by carbohydrates converted by liver into fats & shipped to other tissues for storage via bloodstream. Study: goo.gl/uDGIwD goo.gl/xWUg3r & goo.gl/oMgBct.

The blood sample in the photo has been spun in a centrifuge. The more dense cells go to the bottom. The large fat carrying lipoproteins (in this case will be mostly ULDL, VLDL, IDL & some LDL particles) are less dense & therefor float above the cells. Healthy blood plasma is clear light yellow. This plasma is opaque due to the high concentrations of fat carrying proteins in the plasma; unhealthy.

In brief: Elevated blood fats
This is a broad topic with variable implications.
Fats are normal components of the blood, but elevated values are common. Which fats are elevated to what degree determine significance and treatment options. Although genetics play a major role, lifestyle changes (weight, diet, other medications) major be beneficial. If still inadequate, judicious use of appropriate medications will help.
