In brief: Metabolic syndrome

Insulin resistance is also know as metabolic syndrome or syndrome X, and was defined in the 80's by Gerald Reaven (see Banting lecture 1984).
It describes a constellation of signs, viz overweight (or abdominal circumference >94cm) raised BP >135/80, Raised fasting Glucose >5.6mmol/l, raised triglycerides and lowered HDL. It is assumed to increase the risk for diabetes and CVD.
