Will taking Tums or Zantac (ranitidine) 150 with Advil help prevent stomach irritation/upset caused by Advil?

In brief: PPI is better

Over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec (omeprazole) or Nexium (esomeprazole) can protect the stomach from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil (ibuprofen)/Aleve (naproxen).
H2 blockers like Zantac (ranitidine)/Pepcid (famotidine) at double dose are less effective, & protect only the duodenum, not the stomach. Antacids like Tums (calcium carbonate) are inadequate for this purpose.
