What will fix a herniated disc, will I ever be able to go back to normal daily activities or will this pain last forever?

In brief: It varies
Most herniated disks heal on their own.
The leg pain usually subsides, but some chronic low back pain is common. The best thing most people can do is to be as normal as possible during the early phase, but limiting uncomfortable positions/activities, heavy lifting, bending, twisting. Low impact aerobic activity is excellent for low back health (30 minutes 3 times a week minimum).

In brief: Odds in your favor
Your body will heal itself of a disk herniation 70-80% of the time with non-operative treatment.
Lifestyle modification (avoiding activities that make symptoms worse), nsaid's and physical therapy can provide some relief until it does so. Judicious use of oral or epidural steroids may also help. However, get immediate attention for any weakness of changes in bowel or bladder function.
