In brief: Usually 24 to 48 h

A stomach virus can be caused by many different bugs /viruses.
It can be as mild as a little stomach cramping to severe cramping with violet vomiting with diarrhea.. Many times a person refers to a stomach virus as food poisoning. Most of the stomach viruses usually pass in 24 to 48 hours. Drink plenty of fluids, if you're having vomiting or diarrhea you'll need even more fluid. Possibly even a sports nutritional drink to replenish your body with some of the electrolytes it's losing in the diarrhea and the nausea and vomiting. You can also try one of the over-the-counter medications that help with nausea and vomiting and diarrhea. You'll probably want to avoid any significant food intake during this time. Fluids are the most important at this time not food.
