Will someone with altered mental status from high potassium return to normal once potassium is lowered?

If the altered mental status is due to a high potassium level, then yes.
It is possible, however, that the high potassium level could be a manifestation of some other underlying issue, such as a kidney issue, high blood sugar, etc. If that is the case, then the underlying issue would likely need to be resolved as well. If someone has a change in mental status, they should be seen in the ER. Best.
