In brief: Depends

No two people are alike.
Try to be as compliant as possible. Missing a night or two on rare occasion probably won't hurt, but why take the chance. If retained feel tight when you put them in, you've been without them too long. If concerned, see the Dentist or (hopefully) Orthodontist that treated you for a status check.

In brief: Depends

The answer to your question depends on many factors too numerous to go into here.
You should continue to wear your retainer for at least a year. Then stop wearing it gradually - every other night, then three times a week, etc. If you notice any teeth moving, it important to get your retainer back in for as long as is needed to straighten things. Don't wait till you need braces again.
