In brief: Varicose veins

Varicose veins are diagnosed based on examination.
You can also have a type of ultrasound scan called a Doppler or a duplex scan. This helps to show how the blood is flowing in the veins. It can show whether any of the valves are damaged - which is useful to know when planning treatment. Occasionally, other tests are needed if the veins are complex.

In brief: Varicose Vein Tests

The main test for assessing varicose veins is a venous duplex (ultrasound) with reflux testing.
Other test performed less frequently are CT venogram, MR venogram, & catheter venography. All have their roles. See a vascular surgeon who is a vein specialist to have the appropriate testing performed, as the studies should be reviewed and interpreted by a vein expert in order to determine treatments.

In brief: Tests for VV

The gold standard for testing and evaluating varicose veins is a complete venous duplex ultrasound.
This test should include an evaluation of the superficial and deep system of veins as well as the valves of the superficial system. This test should be done by a registered vascular technician (RVT) or a physician trained to do venous ultrasounds (RPhS). See a vein specialist.
