I asked endodontist to look at an xray to see if there is any decay at a tooths margin holding a crown. He couldn't tell if there was any decay. Why?

In brief: Marginal caries

Your General Dentist would be the best one to ask this question & determine if there is any caries present.
Having said that caries cannot be detected on x-rays if it is inside the crown as the crown blocks view of area inside of crown. Moderate to severe caries can be detected clinically or with use of x-rays on tooth structure not under crown. Sometimes very early caries between teeth is missed.

In brief: Crown block xray

Most Crown materials block the X-ray beam so dentists can not see the condition of the tooth underneath.
Decay at the margin is detectible by X-ray however.

In brief: Reasons

1). X-ray is 2 dimensional representation of 3 dimensional object.
Can't see everything. 2). Restoration may obstruct visibility. Ask your Dentist to keep an eye on the area.

In brief: Speak with DDS

Is the tooth symptomatic? Did your dentist advise you to see an endodontist? Was a clinical examination done in addition to viewing the radiograph? All variables to ascertain if the tooth needs endodontic treatment.
