In brief: Attachment

Our personalities are developed as a result of inborn temperament and early life experiences, which can be yet are not necessarily traumatic.
We model our parents and other significant people in our lives, and as a result we develop attachment styles. This is true for all of us, and sometimes there are extremes of personality that interfer with our functioning: thus personality disorders.
