In brief: Inflammation

Esophagitis is inflammation of the esophagus, the tube from the throat to the stomach.
Symptoms include pain/difficulty swallowing, sore throat, heartburn and hoarseness. The most common cause is gastrointestinal reflux disease, due to acid from the stomach backing up into the esophagus. Other causes include infection, alcohol, smoking, surgery. Treatment will depend on what the cause is.
