Went to ER for chest pain. Ddimer was elevated. CT of chest ruled out blood clot. Didn't scan legs. What causes elevated d dimer if no clot?

Several things. Significant positive predictors of D-dimer positive included female sex; over age; black race; cocaine use; general, limb, or neurologic immobility; hemoptysis; hemodialysis; active malignancy; rheumatoid arthritis; lupus; sickle cell disease; prior venous thromboembolism pregnancy and postpartum state. CT angiography accurate for detecting pulm. embolism.
Need to be followed. May need leg vein Doppler ultrasound. Follow up with your primary care physician. Search vascular ultrasound at radiologyinfo.org. .
