In brief: Expired medication

After a year, the chance that the medication may not work is one you must consider. You are increasing the possibility that your infection will not be adequately treated, possibly increasing the risk of resistant infection.

In brief: Officially, not safe

Medications are not proven to be safe nor proven to be effective after their expiration dates.
Of course, that does not mean bad things will surely happen if one takes expired Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). If one has no problems taking good Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim), it is unlikely that a bad problem will happen with recently expired Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). Years ago, old expired tetracycline was reportedly a cause of liver damage.
