Might eating too much sugar cause diabetes?

In brief: No

Not in normal conditions.
However, if there is a tendency, risk factors (like obesity), familiy history etc, it will certainly make things worse. As health advice, however, eating too much sugar is always bad anyway. A healthy diet is much better choice, including most sugars non refined (natural, from fruits, etc).
