In brief: Opiod overdose

Opiod narcotics have several analgesic (anti pain) effects, however, they also slow our heart and our breathing (cardiopulmonary repression).
An overdose can cause death because a person can potentially stop breathing and one's heart can stop. Thankfully, there are medicines like narcan (naloxone) which block the effects of opioids and can reverse the effects if the patient can be helped in time. CPR 1st.
