In brief: Multiform

Insomnia is a general symptom that can be the result of many physical and emotional issues.
On the emotional side, insomnia is a frequent presenting symptom of depression and/or anxiety. A trip to your primary care physician possibly followed by an evaluation by a mental health specialist would be a good idea.

Insomnia is almost always associated with some underlying condition/ cause. Make sure you are practicing good sleep hygiene, such as avoid caffeine/ tobacco before bed, avoid execising right before bed, etc.

Having a regular sleep schedule, especially a regular time of awakening is very important also.

Use bed for sleep only. No caffeine before bed and no big meal before bed. Listen to soft music. No tv or anything that is activating you mind. You should also see your doctor for medication option.
