In brief: Give it time

We know true strep is universally sensitive (killed) by penicillin, but the tissue disruption/pain triggered by infection may take time to improve.
You can also have a co-infection with a throat virus (like mono) which can produce some of the most painful soar throats. If your doc treated you without confirming the strep, a virus may be the main cause and the penicillin would do nothing.
