In brief: Eustachian tube ...

It sounds like you have what is called "Eustachian tube dysfunction".
The tiny tube that connects the ear to the throat helps equalize air pressure on both sides of your eardrum. When the tube swells shut (as it can with a sinus infection) the ear has trouble balancing the pressures so you get symptoms. Treatment can include oral decongestants for 6 or more weeks. Warning: they can increase BP.
