I was sitting with my back hunched forward and I felt a popping in the left side of my chest, near my heart, followed by a sharp pain. What happened?

Nerve. This appears to have been a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between two ribs. The popping feeling could have been from the ligament that holds the rib joint onto the sternum(breastbone). The sharp pain would be aggravated by a deep breath or cough. This situation should resolve in a few days, but see your md as needed.
