In brief: Atrial enlargement &

slowed atrial conduction are classic precursors & setup for atrial fibrillation.
AFib is rare without these. Less commonly discussed are atherosclerosis, plaque ruptures & compromises of circulation to atrial muscle, a setup for ?ed atrial function just as it is for ventricular muscle. Thus optimize NMR lipoproteins, HbA1c & Systolic BP, the 3 biggest drivers of atherosclerosis.

In brief: Afib

Left atrial dilation is expected with atrial fibrillation.
Discussion with your doc including risk/benefit of anticoagulants in alcoholics with Afib should take place.
