Hi doctor my doctor called me last week and said I had been positive for herpes not genital herpes. Is the test sometime false positive I read up on?

Sure, but... Usually, positive test results are true positives. If the test was for antibodies to Herpes 1 and Herpes 2, maybe the result was POSITIVE for Herpes 1. Type 1 is mainly transmitted usually by oral contact and causes “cold sores”, but can also cause genital herpes. Type 2 is more often seen in genital herpes. That means the location (genital or not) doesn't always correlate with the Herpes type.
