Sometimes when I'm making a bowel movement, I feel sharp pain in my sides/ pelvic area. It comes and goes. sometimes when I just start to "push" not even after straining for a period of time right in the beginning and makes it hard to pass a bowl movement

In brief: Pain with BM

There may be pain from strain of muscles during defecation.
Perhaps taking a stool softener daily or inserting a rectal glycerin suppository would make your bowel movements easier and pain free. If symptoms persist, a rectopelvic examination would be recommended.
