Saw a shrink today for sleep problems. Asked me very, very few questions and then prescribed Remeron (mirtazapine). Thoughts? This par for the course?Just do it?

In brief: Common but ok

It is common and acceptable to leave a session regarding sleep issues with a psychiatrist with a prescription for a medication to help sleep.
Mirtazapine (Remeron) is an anti-anxiety and antidepressant drug unlike traditional SSRIs. It has a significant drowsiness side effect therefore often prescribed for sleep alone. It can also lead to increased appetite and weight gain. CBT is better option.

Another comment is that it is not considered good practice to not do a more thorough assessment before prescribing any medication, certainly psychiatric medications. There's a great book on this by psychiatrist Daniel Carlat called "Unhinged: The Trouble with Psychiatry".
