I have been bothered chronically with increasingly painful leg aches since I had a mild case of polio at 14. Can polio cause residual problems later?

In brief: Post-polio syndrome

Some pts who have suffered prior polio may experience additional symptoms as they age.
In most cases, this does not represent recurrent viral issues, but rather a superimposed problem such as arthritis, or pinched nerves in face of prior damage, which makes all a bit worse. A neurologist may be helpful, as you need to sort out co-morbidities.

In brief: Post-polio syndrome

You may be describing post-polio syndrome (http://www.
mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/post-polio-syndrome/basics/definition/con-20021725). Discuss your concerns w/your FamilyDoc who may recommend physical therapy. Consider over-the-counter pain relief (although each has its own side effect profile). Beware of potential issues if starting narcotics. Make sure you get enough rest/quality sleep.
