Why is beer often served at the end of a marathon?

AnAbsoluteNecessity. Why is beer served at the end of marathons? WHADDA YOU THINK FOR?? For ME it's for the religious experience, of course. For a friend of mine, he says the polyphenols in beer act as anti-inflammatories and mitigate the soreness of that brutal undertaking (excuse pun); sort of like a biologic Motrin. Now, of course he drinks only non-alcoholic beer (he's not religious, like me).
