In brief: Ovulation Process

Ovulation (release of the egg) is a complex interaction of the brain (hypothalamus), pituitary and ovary.
The ovary actually controls the cycle. Fsh stimulates the follicle and 1 ovulates (most receptive of 500+ that grow each cycle), estrogen from foll is signal to brain to trigger ovul (lh). Ovul releases egg and starts genetic meiosis. Fertility drug (hcg ) is similar to lh, others affect above.

In brief: Ovulation

The brain sends a signal (fsh) to the ovary to initiate egg development.
About 50 - 200 immature eggs start to grow then 1 dominates to a certain size and maturity signaling the brain to release the lh hormone to allow the egg to be released from its sac or follicle. The ovary then switches production from estrogen to Progesterone to help an embryo implant if fertilization occurs.

In brief: Ovulation summary

Ovulation starts by a signal from the brain to induce an egg to become mature.
This is called FSH (follicle stimulating hormone). The egg starts to activate and cells around the egg produce estrogen. When there is enough estrogen the brain is signalled to send a burst of lh to trigger the ovulation. You can test this in an ovulation predictor kit. The mature egg will be released in 12-24 hours.
