I recently had stool with what looked like a red thick string, is this something I should get checked out right away?

In brief: Blood in stool

Blood in a bowel movement is abnormal and in your age group a minor condition like anal fissure or hemorrhoid is a usual cause.
Since you are not bleeding profusely and don't have abnormal bowel symptoms otherwise there is no urgency in being examined but you could discuss this with your physician or Gynecologist who will advise you.
