In brief: Pain on the left rib

region is likely not related to the gall bladder b/c the gall bladder is located underneath the lower Rt.
rib cage. Gall stones are very common and inflammation of the gall bladder can be aggravated by eating fatty foods. Avoiding fatty foods helps to reduce the frequency of gall bladder attacks. However, if the pain is on her left side, it is not likely gall bladder. If it persists, see doc.

In brief: Gallbladder is right

Your girlfriend should see her doctor now.
The gallbladder is on the right side not the left. An organ called the spleen and part of the intestine is in the area you describe. There could have been some injury to the left side of her ribcage to cause swelling and pain but you do not give this history. If the spleen is the problem it could be serious. Kidney is more remote cause. See the doctor.

In brief: Gallbladder

The gallbladder is on the right side, so it would be unlikely to be the cause of left sides pain.
There is a rare entity known as situs inversus where some or all of the abdominal organs are on opposite sides. A proper evaluation from a primary care doc will be your best bet in figuring it out. Hope this helps!
