Intense stomach pain, diarreah and nausea. No vomiting. Can I have the stomach flu with no vomiting?

Stomach flu. This is an incredibly non-specific lay term that has very little meaning to a diagnostician. It is often used to allay patients concerns when a specific causative agent cannot be clearly identified. If you have GI symptoms which persist beyond 3-5 days you should see a doctor.

Yes. Yes, after a stomach flu with vomiting you may have discomfort for a number of days. Avoid things that can irritate the stomach lining -coffee, alcohol, aspirin, NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, etc). Eat foods that are easy to digest -rice, bananas, applesauce; avoid all fats, as fats slow down the emptying of the stomach. Read more...

Every 2 months I get severe nausea & vomiting. All tests are 'normal'. Doc says its just bad luck w/ stomach flu. Could there be another cause?

Sure. Guy or gal? If gal, could be related to hormones, menses, ovulation (perhaps just from one of the ovaries, thus every other month). Check timing of symptoms with menstrual cycle. Could be cyclic vomiting syndrome; could be other triggers for the symptoms, could even be migraine related. Could be other stuff too. Keep looking. Read more...

Probably a dumb question, but I take two doses of ODT Zofran (ondansetron) daily due to disease and nausea. Does this help protect me from vomiting from stomach flu?

Not Dumb! It helps. Zofran (ondansetron) helps with nausea and vomiting from many causes. So if you are taking it for chronic nausea, it will also affect the nausea from an acute gastroenteritis (stomach bug). It's a good question! Zofran (ondansetron) treats symptoms: nausea and vomiting, not the cause of them. These symptoms can have many causes, which Zofran (ondansetron) does not correct. Read more...

Abdominal bloating, May be unusual intestinal virus or could be food poisoning with camphylobacter as that has a waxing and waning presentation( usually diarrhea as well) . Do you have diarrhea? Would also check for H. pylori and keep a food diary to see which foods, if any are associated with the problem. f/u /w doc over 48-96 hours. Read more...
Recovery. Probably your GI tract wasn't totally settled to have such a 'relapse' -I wonder if you were kind enough to yourself (no alcohol, proper sleep, proper food)?Sometimes people rush themselves to get back to a 'normal' lifestyle, but that could be unhealthy such as McDonald's cheeseburgers or something that you're not ready to digest. Healing takes time, especially with a high severity of illness. Read more...
