Remeron (mirtazapine) is causing nagging headaches. I find it great for sleep. Would Trazadone cause headaches. Thanks?

Not commonly. Discuss this switch w/ the Doc who prescribes. Headaches are NOT a common side effect of Remeron (mirtazapine) either, so it might be something else entirely. Also those meds are not exactly interchangeeable. It's a good idea to seek possible direct cause of headache and to discuss choices w/ Doc. Best!

Specialist. Your best move would be to see a physician who specializes in sleep disorders as it's not advisable to become dependent on these types of medications especially at your age as they become quite habit forming and you wouldn't want to become dependent on them. The physician would perform a thorough evaluation of your insomnia and advise you on medication or Referrals to other specialists as well. Worked for 2 weeks. only Ambien (zolpidem) is habit forming. If you took many of those COMBINED and not sleep well, means you have severe mental disease not just sleep problem. If Rx works for only 2w then means not proper dosing for long term benefit. You have severe problem and need a psychiatrist early to avoid aggravation and waste of time and health by symptomatic treatment. Read more...

If I have chronic depression and severe sleep problems, can I take trazodone or remeron (mirtazapine) to help? Which is better?

Depends. Trazodone is often used to help people sleep but it is a very weak antidepressant. Remeron (mirtazapine) is a much more effective antidepressant. Make sure your diagnosis is correct, though. Bipolar depression frequently causes severe sleep problems and requires different treatment. A psychiatrist or family physician with an interest in psychiatry can help you sort this out. Read more...

Can I ask to switch my remeron (mirtazapine) 45 mg at night to trazadone and have similar sedation effects? I can't fall asleep on remeron (mirtazapine) and gained 70pds

Yes. Remeron (mirtazapine) is approved for insomnia; but, it is also approved for individuals who need to gain weight (usually geriatric patients). Trazadone acts as a sleep- inducing hypnotic without the weight-gain associated with remeron (mirtazapine). So go ahead and talk to your dr about risks and benefits of trazadone for insomnia. Consult your MD. Mirtazapine can often be effective in management of insomnia, usually at lower doses (7.5-15mg) than what you are taking. It can also promote weight gain. After having gained 70 lbs (?Solely as a result of the mirtazapine?), you should certainly consult the prescribing md and ask for some alternatives: trazodone, melatonin, a gaba agonist (zolpidem, lunesta), remelteon, et al.
