In some individuals a cyst can form within a sebaceous gland (sweat gland) of the skin if it does not have a duct to the skin surface.
When this happens the gland still produces its normal secretory products which can collect as a cheesy material within the gland or partial duct. This can become enlarged and inflamed over time and painful. Known as epidermal inclusion cysts, they can recur.
