In brief: Many causes

Bleeding gums could be due to a number of issues.
The main cause is generally accumulation of plaque causing gingivitis. But more advanced gum disease (periodontitis) could cause gums to bleed as well. Other causes are bleeding disorders, hormonal changes during pregnancy, teeth infection, scurvy, leukemia, use of blood thinners and vitamin K deficiency . See your dentist for an evaluation.

In brief: See dentist

This is probably from gum disease that can be treated by a dentist.
It is important that you see a dentist as soon as possible so that you do not risk losing teeth.

In brief: Contact dentist

See your dentist for a complete evaluation.
You do not mention your age, there are many variables; the most obvious is gum issues, which can be addressed by the dental office. There may also be systemic problems which may need to be referred to your primary care MD. Try the simplest first and see your dentist.

In brief: It is a gum disease

Bleeding gums can be a sign that you are at risk for or already have gum disease.
This is a serious problem, which should be checked by a dentist. The good news is that this condition is curable. Call your dentist today!

In brief: Bleeding gums

Most common reason is gum disease (bacterial infection), although there are other possible causes.
See your Dentist. If caught early gum disease is readily treatable. If more advanced, the services of a specialist Periodontist may be advisable. If cause is medical rather than dental your Dentist will refer you on to your Physician for care.

In brief: You can heal

When your gums bleed your body is telling you you're not brushing^flossing enough to keep harmful bacteria from infecting them. Bear down and get a new toothbrush and start brushing 3 or 4 times a day until the bleeding stops happening.
..then twice a day, especially right before bedtime will keep your mouth healthy. If you haven't been having checkups at least twice a year resolve to get on track!
