If enlarged lymph nodes in neck are because of cancer somewhere else would it have to be in an area close to the neck?

In brief: Yes and no...

Neck lymph nodes may become enlarged with tumors of the head and neck, such as squamous cell carcinoma of the throat.
(Smokers are prone to this problem.) This is because the lymphatic channels in the neck will filter through neck nodes before draining into a larger vessel in the chest. In contrast, lymphoma is a tumor of lymph nodes themselves, and can enlargement of any node.
