In brief: Onychomycosis

Need more information.
Is the area red? dry skin? Is the nail changing colors (i.e. green, yellow, etc)? Is it all nails or just one nail?

In brief: Examination needed.

There are so many reasons for what you describe that a personal examination by a physician is really the only way to make a reasonable diagnosis.
Most problems are benign but there are rare tumors of the nail bed that can be very painful and will not resolve on their own. Give it a week or so and if the problem persists, see a hand surgeon.
