I started walking daily and now my knees hurt very badly, haven't walked in 4 days to relieve knee pain and they hurt just as bad or worse. Why would my knees be hurting like this just from starting a daily walk?

Varies. There are a variety of reasons for a person to have knee pain with walking and an exam and appropriate studies can usually determine the cause, so I would not hesitate to be seen. Arthritis and internal derangement of the knee would be uncommon in a 37 year old without injury. TFL syndrome is most common cause, which is a tendonitis of a tendon on outside of thigh that inserts on outside of knee.

I had an ankle injury, which has gotten worse and it hurts to walk, and now my knee on the same leg is hurting. Could the knee pain be b/c the ankle?

Yes. The mechanics of walking are off with an injured ankle. It would be easy to also injure the knee in that way. Time to see a physician, xray if indicated, maybe a walking cast, at least compression bandage, crutches to take some of the weight off the leg if no walking cast perhaps, ice, rest, elevation. Exercise via swimming for now. Read more...

Patellofemoral pain? Based on your description of the problem, your young age, and a negative x-ray, i'm suspicious that your pain may be patellofemoral in nature. If this is the case, exercises to strengthen the quadriceps can be very helpful. An elastic knee brace may also help. Since the symptoms are acute, it is possible that you have a torn tendon or ligament. Ultrasound or MRI can be very helpful. Read more...
