How can I tell if my eye is bulging? I know I can go to an ophthalmologist, but is there a way I can do a self-check until I see a doc? Signs/symptoms

Old photos. Pull out some old photos and compare the eyes with your current look. This gives a clue but may vary due to light, time of day and your overall state of health. Your ophthalmologist can actually measure the eye protrusion with his instrumentation. I am guessing you have a thyroid dysfunction and are worried about Graves disease in which the eyes bulge outward.
