This complaint may be due to either water or wax that are trapped in your outer ear canal, fluid collection behind your ear drum as commonly happens after a cold, dysfunction of the connection between the middle ear and the back of the nose (the eustachian tube) as occurs commonly with nasal congestion/cold, bubbles naturally found in the lower jaw joint or when the ear drum is perforated.

Your eustachian tube is supposed to equalize pressure betweent the outside and the middle ear. When it is not functioning correctly, you may hear a popping sensation when it is trying to open.
