Can wearing eyeglasses have a long-term effect on your eyesight?

In brief: No

This is a common "old wives tale" that wearing glasses will somehow cause permanent changes in the eyes.
This is not true; the utility of wearing eyeglasses is simply to see better but there will be no changes in your basic eye power that would not have occurred anyway whether you are wearing glasses or not.

In children, it is very important to have proper eyeglass correction, as the brain is still developing. If children who should have glasses are not wearing them or if the glasses prescription is off, it can cause "lazy eye" or amblyopia. In adults, the visual system in the brain has formed, so glasses are to help you see better!
