Any advice for self medication of severe depression?

Yes DONT!! Severe depression should be treated by a psychiatrist. Self medication is a very bad idea.
Self help vs self . medication. Self - help is great. Self -medication not so great. For severe depression - insure that you are also receiving care from a psychiatrist/ psychologist. Start with talking therapy (such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or insight oriented psychotherapy). Don't isolate. Spend time w people. Use your support system. Get out. Don’t stagnate at home. Get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.

Medication. There is not one medication i can say that is only for the severely depressed. Most patients are usually started on one family of medications. If it is not working, then they are switched to a different family. If the medicine is partially effective it can be augmented with additional medications (i.e. Abilify, (aripiprazole) wellbutrin, deplin). Optimal treatment is a combination of medication and therapy. How can I help myself to get out of severe depression without medication, I want to solve this alone and quickly please..

Unlikely success. There is nothing wrong with asking for and accepting help when you need it--refusing to ask or accept help can be its own problem, and with true depression, can significantly prolong the misery. Medication and counseling can significantly improve mood / function and can shorten symptomatic periods. See your dr or a psychiatrist for assistance with this condition--it is as valid as any other. Can a person who has a chemical imbalance that causes depression work through depression without the use of medication? I have been diagnosed with severe depression. I have refused to be treated with anti-depressants, but want to know if this was a bad id

This . This is a question that many patients ask their doctors when the diagnosis of depression is made. While it is true that symptoms of untreated mild or even moderate depression tend to abate within approximately six months, the decision of whether to use antidepressant medications or not must be carefully weighted against possible risks and benefits of either approach. Untreated depression is often associated with a high risk of suicide, impaired judgment that could lead to decisions later regretted, and significant emotional pain and suffering that could significantly affect a person's quality of life. Untreated depression in middle aged individuals has been associated with increased risk of alzheimer's disease. On the other hand, antidepressant medications could have side effects that, while mild and tolerable for most people, may be significant and poorly tolerated by some individuals. These and other factors should be considered and discussed with your doctor before making this important decision. Read more...
