In brief: Uric acid arthritis

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by uric acid crystals.
Uric acid crystals form when the amount of uric acid, a natural waste product, becomes too high in the blood. Uric acid levels can become high due to poor kidney function, obesity, or genetics. Gout is treated by decreasing inflammation to treat the arthritis and by decreasing uric acid levels in the blood to dissolve the crystals.

In brief: Crystals in joints

Gout is a condition where the waste product, uric acid, builds up in the blood causing the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints.
Most commonly, this occurs in the big toe or in the foot/heel areas. Foods (seafood, beer, etc.) can also raise uric acid levels initiating a gout flare. Treatment is aimed at reducing the uric acid level and/or reducing joint inflammation.
