What's the likely cause of pain in the back of my heels after explosive movements (running, jumping)? I've tried rest, orthotics, stretching, etc.

In brief: Achilles

Could be achilles tendinitis which can put you at risk for achilles rupture .
..Let your heel tell you what you can and can't do... Pain is the body's protective mechanism.

In brief: Achilles Tendonitis

It sounds like you suffer from insertional Achilles tendonitis.
I would advise a walking boot, physical therapy and an oral steroid. Many times cold laser therapy is very helpful.

In brief: Several Causes

That area can have several problems and can happen togather. Achilles tendon injury, bursitsi, and even bone injury are on the list.
Sounds like you need a podiatrist to tell you for sure.
