Can 5-htp used to treat OCD instead of zoloft or paxil (paroxetine)?

Maybe. 5-htp is available as an over the counter supplement in many countries, and has shown effectiveness in depression. Whether it is clinically useful for OCD is unknown to me. I have prescribed both paxil (paroxetine) and zoloft in the past for OCD, but we now have better medications, so I wouldn't recommend either the supplement or those two medications. I believe the best medical treatment are other drugs.

What are the replacements for zoloft or paxil (paroxetine) today to treat OCD?

Depends. There are many treatments for OCD - it really depends on your particular symptoms right now. Your best bet is to see your psychiatrist to discuss the various options and a psychologist to find behavioral changes you can strive towards to augment the efficacy of any medication. What is the point of having paxil (paroxetine) or Zoloft to treat premature ejaculation if its side effect decreases libido? How many doses will effect the libido?

It may not occur. Those medications don't always cause low libido. A young otherwise healthy male with a regular libido (prior to starting meds) is probably not likely to get decreased libido with treatment, though it could happen. Work with your doctor to find the appropriate dosage and schedule for treating your premature ejaculation without decreasing sex drive. SSRIs can work very well for this problem. Read more...
Variable. Paxil (paroxetine) and zoloft can but don't always decrease libido. Not everyone experiences this side-effect which can happen with one SSRI and not another and can't be predicted. It can happen after the first dose or only after you have been on it for awhile. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict how either of these will effect a particular individual. Hopefully, personalized genetic medicine will help. Read more...

Pregnant. Need Zoloft or Paxil (paroxetine) after. Are either safe while breastfeeding? I would need 75mg of Zoloft vs. 20mg of Paxil (paroxetine), which is better or formula?

Either. I would recommend whichever is most effective for you and gives you fewer side effects. Paxil (paroxetine) can be sedating for many people which could effect your ability to care for your baby. As far as breastfeeding there is no evidence that either would be transferred into your baby's milk. Hope this helps. Good luck . Read more...
Either. Based on the literature, nursing babies are almost all completely spared exposure to both these drugs, so there is no need to avoid breastfeeding while taking either of the medications. If you have better personal experience with one of them than the other in the past, you might choose that one regardless of the dose. If not, then Zoloft (sertraline) may be a better first choice from a tolerability standpoint. Read more...

If Zoloft 62mg wasn't very effective would going up to 75mg work better? Tried Paxil (paroxetine) before and 20mg helped. Need safest option for breastfeeding.

Increase is OK. 62mg of Zoloft (sertraline) is unusual as typically this is prescribed in increments of 25mg. Zoloft (sertraline) is considered a relatively safe drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The difference between 62 and 75 is minimal, but if you are experiencing depression, try the increase, with consult with your OB/GYB. You cannot equate effective dosages between medications as their metabolic rate is different. Read more...
