In brief: Dry cough

It depends on what the cause of the cough is.
It can be reflux esophagitis with a sour taste in the mouth and heartburn, asthma worse at night, allergies related, or an upper respiratory infection of some kind, among other things. If a smoker, stop now. There is online helplines and many aids available. Herbal tea with honey and Delsym (dextromethorphan) help relieve cough symptoms from colds. TB needs ruled out.

must also consider if you are taking any ACE inhibitors or arbs which are blood pressure meds. This can also cause a dry cough.

In brief: Determine cause

Chronic dry cough is most commonly due to 3 conditions: asthma, post-nasal drip, or GERD (heartburn).
You might have one or a combination of all three. Post-viral cough is also very common and can last for weeks. Further workup by allergist is helpful as they can perform a more detailed assessment including skin testing and pulmonary function testing. Treatment will depend on cause.
