I sprained my ankle 3 days ago and began bearing full weight on it today. Now its back swollen and is starting to bruise. Did I start activity early?

Possibly. First I would just make sure you have been seen and had an xrays just to make sure you are not walking around with a fracture. If xrays negative, then yes it is not uncommon for people to try to increase their activities and if the pain and swelling worsen to conclude they did too much. You could just rest it more and then more gradually increase your activity when you are doing better. Read more...

Bad to the Bone. What is more important is just how bad your body thinks the injury is. The bruising tells you that a somewhat serious injury has occurred. The swelling is your body's way of trying to stabilize the injury so maximum healing potential can occur. It needs seen. At 2+ months post-injury, if still swollen, painful and bruised, it should be examined by an orthopedist and imaged. Sprained my ankle over a month ago and it is still swollen and bruises on and off. The other night I sat out due to pain from tumbling.

Persistent swelling. After an ankle sprain symptoms generally resolve in 1-2 weeks but it is not out of the ordinary to take up to 6-8 weeks. If you have been resting, the swelling should be done by now. If it is not improved, there may be more than just a sprain. Special x-rays or an MRI scan to look at the talus would be the next step in evaluation. Read more...

Ankle sprain. If the initial injury was over 3 months ago and your ankle is still swollen and bruised, it might be more than sprained. It would be helpful to see an orthopedist, and get an xray. You might also need to have MRI if the orthopedist suspects a ligament injury. Until then, it is probably making things worse to continue to play on it. Read more...
