X-ray: Breaking/cracking a rib can certainly occur if you take a severe fall. Why? Ice? The pain would be sharp, quite focused at the area of impact, hurt more when you press over the area, & possibly worse when taking a deep breath. The only way to know for sure is to have an x-ray. It may not be necessary to know for sure if the pain is mild, but I would go in if you have the "deep breath" symptom:)
