In brief: Can regress artery

HDL is not cholesterol but complex protein particles, 1, 2 or 3 ApoA-1 organizing proteins plus ~100 other proteins. HDL are fat/lipid scavenger particles: cells having excess lipids can bind HDL-particles to remove lipids, then excrete the HDL-particles into the extracellular water around the cell & the HDL-particles will carry the fats elsewhere; potentially to the liver for excretion.

In brief: HDL

HDL is commonly known as the "good" cholesterol.
Higher levels lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. However, there are not good therapies to help raise this (statins raise this only mildly). Exercise and tobacco cessation can help raise it. Other therapies such as niacin and fish oil do not have outcome data to support their use currently. It's always a good idea to know your cholesterol.
