From two Greek roots: "Ortho", meaning straight;upright and "Dont", meaning tooth. So together they mean straight, upright teeth.

In brief: Straight teeth

Ortho = straight, dontics = teeth.
Orthodontists are Dental Specialists with >4000 hrs of full time Residency training in dento-facial growth & development supervision and resolution of malocclusion (bad bite) to produce a result that provides ideal function, superlative esthetics, & reasonable stability. We put teeth and jaws where they belong.

Please note that there is a difference between Orthodontics and Orthodontist. Orthodontics is the science of tooth/jaw movement/alignment. Orthodontist is specialist with 2+ years of specialty training beyond dental school, and a practice limited exclusively to Orthodontics. Only 5% of all Dentists are Orthodontic Specialists.
