Thiamine deficiency is more evident in people who have an underlying disorder of energy production--mitochondrial disorders.
It exacerbates their symptoms--most prominently chronic fatigue, muscle and joint pain. Other people at risk are those who had gastric bypass--also at risk of copper and iron deficiency. A remarkably well-written article by a psychiatrist is a pleasure to read. I'll add.
